Facilitating Lean-Agile Program Execution
Unique to SAFe®, the Release Train Engineer (RTE) is part of the trio of leaders that includes product managers and system architects. This plays a critical role in leading Agile Release Trains (ARTs) to deliver value. This means that the RTE must create the right environment, have the right conversations, facilitate the right meetings, and gather the right people to make decisions based on the right data.
In the SAFe® RTE course, you’ll learn to execute SAFe and continuously improve PI Planning and other key SAFe events. You’ll discover how to coach leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in new processes and mindsets. And you’ll get the guidance and tools you need to work effectively in remote environments with distributed teams.
SAFe® Release Train Engineer answers the questions:

Three-day training program
The Release Train Engineer course is a three-day training program. Please note: the program for our virtual courses may vary. The hours are approximately 6 hours per day and may be extended with an extra course day.
During this three-day course, gain an in-depth understanding of the role and responsibilities of an RTE in the SAFe enterprise. Through experiential learning, examine the RTE role in a Lean-Agile transformation. Learn how to facilitate ART processes and execution,
coach leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in new processes and mindsets. Explore how to prepare, plan, and execute a Program Increment (PI) planning event, the primary enabler of alignment throughout all levels of a SAFe organization.

Attendees must attend all three days of the course in order to qualify for the exam.
Prerequisites
The following prerequisites are highly recommended:
- Hold at least one current SAFe certification
- Have launched or participated in at least one ART and one PI
Annual Renewal
Certifications expire one year from the date the certification is earned.
Exam prerequisite skills or knowledge
These skills and knowledge are highly recommended in order to be successful in passing the RTE exam:
- SAFe certification
- Cross-team communication skills
- Full use of SAFe principles in action
- Coaching Agile and SAFe facilitation and leading by example
- Launch or participate in at least one ART and one PI
- Working knowledge of team dynamics
When you are ready to take the exam, log into the SAFe Community Platform to access the exam.
When the exam timer ends, the exam will be submitted, regardless of the number of questions answered. A score will be calculated based on the number of questions answered. Unanswered questions will be automatically marked as incorrect. If you finish answering all questions before the exam timer ends, you can click the “Submit” button and your score will be calculated.
When you launch the exam, you will be required to review and accept the Candidate Agreement before starting the exam. Exams are timed and the timer will be visible throughout the exam.
Questions are structured in multiple choice or multiple response format.
Questions will require either one answer or multiple. “Choose two” or a “Choose three” style multiple response questions indicate the number of answers required for the question. Multiple-response questions require all correct answers to be selected as no partial credit is given.
